4. Write a short concise description of your program's mission and how the program functions (300-500 words).
The mission of the Grissom Alternative Program is to provide an alternative approach to learning for students who need additional academic and social services to continue their pursuit toward educational success. Middle school students who have been enrolled in school, but due to their actions can no longer function educationally or behaviorally in the traditional school setting, can be referred to the program. Students can be referred to the program by MMS administration, through the MIST or RTI process, or through a request by a parent/guardian. The referral will list specific problems that the student is having as well as specific goals that the student would like to accomplish while in the GAP program. The GAP staff reviews all referrals and selects applicants according to the greatest need and available space. Those selected are scheduled for an in-take interview involving the student, parents, and GAP staff. The student and parents complete a contract with GAP staff pertaining to their respective responsibilities. The staff maintains contact with parents through regular reports on behavioral and academic progress. At each semester's end, students may be eligible for an exit interview to return to the traditional classroom at MMS. Academic performance, behavior, and progress toward ISP goals are factors considered to determine future placement of the student.
