Welcome to Indiana University’s Workshop in Methods (WIM). The initial idea for WIM began with Scott Long. He discussed the idea and his vision with Bill Pridemore, who created WIM in 2009 and has been its director since that time.
The mission of the Workshop in Methods is to provide introductory education and training in sophisticated research methods to graduate students and faculty in the social sciences at Indiana University. Our goal is to supplement statistics and methods courses across the Bloomington campus with topical workshops led by leading methodological scholars from IU and across the United States. These workshops take various forms, including (1) seminars on specific research methods and tools and (2) informational presentations on topics such as grant writing, statistical and methodological consulting, and successfully navigating IRB.
Some of our many distinguished guests include Ken Bollen, Katherine Curtis, Peer Fiss, Chris Hansen, Jim Jaccard, Bill Jacoby, Karen Kafadar, Ken Land, Rod Little, Scott Long, Sara Mitchell, David McDowall, Daniel Nagin, Lisa Pearce, Aline Sayer, Phil Schrodt, Tom Smith, and Doug Wiebe. For nearly all of these presenters, the PowerPoint slides and videos of their presentations are available through this website. You can find these presentations listed on the current schedule and in the archives.
We also coordinate with the Indiana Statistical Consulting Center, which hosts workshops on statistical software and other statistical tools each semester. During the summer, WIM also hosts a small number of Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) short courses in statistical methods. We hope these activities provide a supportive community of like-minded scholars, expose faculty and graduate students to rigorous and state of the art quantitative and qualitative methods, and highlight the excellent social science research underway at Indiana University.
