Teaching materials and resources for the K-12 classroom

The following information is the result of collaborative work of curriculum grant recipients, workshop participants and WEST staff. This site is intended to be a resource to the K-12 educator to prepare lessons on all aspects of European culture and society, government and politics, and current hot topics of debate including immigration and the economy.

    The U. S. Department of State is sponsoring the "Doors to Diplomacy" educational challenge--to encourage middle school and high school students around the world to produce web projects that teach others about the importance of international affairs and diplomacy.

Web Resources for Language Teachers

  • BBC Language Tutors
    This resource is for teachers to enhance the process for beginner language learners. The BBC language website offers mini lesson, important words to learn based on topic, and grammar usage. This tool can be use for any beginner language learner.
  • Centro Español de Recursos/Spanish Resource Center at IUPUI
    Funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education, the center has a wide range of materials for K-12 teachers on Spanish and Spain. In addition, the center regularly sponsors professional development opportunities.
  • Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL)
    This website has a wide range of resources for K-12 educators who teach foreign languages. The website provides language proficiency assessment tools, publications and digests, and information about professional development workshops and online training.
  • LangMedia "Language by Country" Collection
    The Five College Center for the Study of World Languages developed this website with funding from the National Security Education Program (NSEP) and the Fund for Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE) of the U.S. Department of Education. Five College international students created short videos on language and culture in their home countries between 1999 and 2002. The website features videos from several West European countries such as France, Germany, Greece, Italy, and Spain.

    This website is a great tool for K-5 educators who teach foreign languages such as Spanish and French. It provides several thematic lessons on topics that include the Rainforest and Day of the Dead for beginner Spanish learners. The website provides teachers with a variety of materials to enhance their language course such as picture books, videos, and examples of memorabilia from the various countries that speak Spanish and French.
  • Ñandutí
    Ñandutí is an excellent resource for preK-8 foreign language teachers. The website, which is developed and maintained by the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL), offers a variety of resources for foreign language teachers such as teaching methodologies, curricula, assessment tools, and professional development opportunities.
  • Teaching Foreign Languages K-12: A Library of Classroom Practices
    Teaching Foreign Languages K-12 is a video library developed with the support of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). The library contains videos from several language classrooms, including Spanish, French, and German. All classroom videos include subtitles in English and are suitable for K-12 teachers of any foreign language. Teachers can use the library to learn about the ACTFL's standards for Foreign Language Learning, assessment practices, as well as 27 classroom programs. The classroom videos illustrate how educators from schools across the country teach students about foreign language and culture.
