This workshop is FREE; attendance will be limited to the first 35 teachers to pre-register. Teachers will also receive a ticket to the September 17th performance of Wendy Kesselman's Tony-nominated new adaptation of The Diary of Anne Frank and a special student work / resource book. A limited amount of substitute pay is available. Please inquire when registering.

- Topic I: The Holocaust in the Netherlands: Historical background to the play
- Topic II: Anne Frank and Her Legacy: Learn about the different editions of the diary and public reception of the Diary of Anne Frank over time. How has the diary been adapted for theater, film, TV, and fiction? How has the image of Anne Frank evolved within the public sphere?
Workshop Presenters
Dr. David Barnouw, Researcher and Spokesperson, Netherlands Institute for War Documentation. Dr. Barnouw is one of the editors of The Diary of Anne Frank: The Critical Edition (7th ed.). He has written frequently about Anne Frank and her influence in post-war Europe and the USA. He often assists writers, researchers, and filmmakers on Anne Frank. He was a historical consultant with the ABC mini-series Anne Frank (May 2001) and appeared in Who betrayed Anne Frank (Discovery Channel 2003). He is also responsible for the Anne Frank writings on display in the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam.
Dr. Alvin Rosenfeld, Director, Institute for Jewish Culture and the Arts, Indiana University. Alvin Rosenfeld is the author of "Imagining Hitler" and "A Double Dying: Reflections on Holocaust Literature," among other books. Rosenfeld's primary research is on the Holocaust, but he is also knowledgeable on Holocaust literature, Jewish writers in America, Jewish autobiography, the Adolf Hitler mystique, anti-Semitism, and Anne Frank.
Wendy Kesselman, the author of the latest adaptation of "The Diary of Anne Frank" will also be available for the discussion portion of the workshop. Kesselman is an American playwright who has written over a dozen plays, including an adapted version of "The Diary of Anne Frank." In 1981, Kesselman was the recipient of the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for work of outstanding quality for the English-speaking theatre for her play "My Sister in this House." Kesselman writes for television as well and most recently adapted a screenplay of John Knowles' "A Separate Peace."

7:00 pm Attend performance of Cardinal Stage Company's The Diary of Anne Frank. This is a special invitation-only performance. After the performance there will be a discussion with the audience and actors, Cardinal Stage Artistic Director Randy White, Alvin Rosenfeld, Wendy Kesselman, and Coordinator for Dutch Language and Culture Esther Ham.
