WEST MA in conjunction with a Kelley School of Business MBA

West European Studies (WEST) offers a joint Master's degree with the internationally renowned Kelley School of Business for students interested in international business. The joint degree is a three-year program that awards a joint MA and MBA degree. Students can finish this joint program in 66 credit hours rather than the 84 credit hours necessary to earn the two degrees separately.

Why get an MA/MBA?

WEST is one of just a few programs in the country that offers a Master's degree in West European Studies. While Business School courses focus on the fundamentals of business and prepare students to take high-level management positions in corporations, the MA program gives students the opportunity to study languages, cultures, politics, history, and economics, gaining in-depth knowledge of a particular country or region. This experience can be invaluable to a student who hopes to work in a multinational corporation.

Master's degree requirements are outlined in the Graduate School bulletin.

West European Studies Requirements:

Students take 24 credits in West European Studies under the course requirements for the MA (under the MA/MBA regulations), including:

School of Business Requirements:

Students take 42 credit hours for the MBA degree under MA/MBA requirements, including:

  • MBA Foundations Core - 15 credits
  • Leadership, Professional, and Career Development (LPCD) - 1.5 credits
  • Leadership Development Institute (LDI) - 1.5 credits
  • Accounting requirement: A548 - Strategic Cost Analysis and Control - 1.5 credits
  • IT requirement (choice among four courses) - 1.5 credits

Students should consult the Kelley School of Business for details regarding the MBA requirements for this joint degree.

Language Requirement:

In-depth knowledge of one West European language.

To be eligible for the joint MA/MBA program, students must apply to the two Master's programs separately. The MA/MBA is open to students who have been accepted to both the MA program in WEST (in the University Graduate School) and the Master of Business Administration program in the School of Business.

The student must select a thesis advisory committee of at least three faculty members representing both WEST and the School of Business. WEST adheres to thesis format and printing requirements set by the University Graduate School. Master's theses range in length from 50 to 75 pages, not to exceed 100 pages.

Recommended Course of Study

Year 1

Admitted students begin their work in the College of Arts and Sciences. Work during the first year of the MA program typically includes enrolling in courses in accordance with MA requirements. We strongly advise students to spend their first program year completing requirements for the WEST MA.

Year 2

Students complete the required core courses in the MBA program at the Business School.

Year 3

Students complete their course work in Area Studies and the Business School and begin work on the Master's thesis. Area studies work in the third year typically includes completion of remaining course requirements and language instruction, plus enrollment in thesis hours.

Students are ultimately responsible for verifying that they have indeed fulfilled all degree requirements.

Candidates are advised to regularly meet with the Director to verify course schedules before registering and to confirm that all the necessary signatures and documents are on file.
