President Emeritus Ryan

Citizen of the World

When I think of the international stature of Indiana University, I think of when Pat and I persuaded Dr. Wells to attend the quinquennial meeting of the International Association of Universities. He had been a founding President in the 1950s, and the meeting was to be held in Manila, where Indiana alumni are numerous and devoted. We arrived late at night, but nevertheless the airport was thronged with the I.U. reception group—easily in the hundreds of people of all ages, with banners and crimson hats and shirts everywhere. A few days later, the formal sessions of the meetings began, and I watched as Dr. Wells walked slowly down the center aisle, being greeted by delegates from every country. He knew some from the early days. All knew him from his reputation, and thus all knew of Indiana University. Finally, as he arrived at the place of the U.S. delegation, the delegates rose to give standing applause to one they recognized as a distinguished citizen of the world.
