Wells Biography: 1902–1930

Biography: 1902–1930

Herman B Wells entered this world on June 7th, 1902. Born in Jamestown, Indiana, a small village northwest of Indianapolis, his parents were Joseph Granville and Anna Bernice (Harting) Wells. Married the year before, Granville was a schoolteacher and farmer and Anna was a homemaker. Young Herman was destined to be their first and only child.

The Wells family moved to Lebanon where Granville found work in the Boone County Treasurer's office. Herman was graduated from Lebanon High School in 1920, where he played baritone in the band and was the treasurer of the yearbook. His classmates voted him "Best Boy." He recalled his youth as an idyllic time, with relatives nearby, regular church attendance, and outings on the inter-urban train to musical events in Indianapolis.

Herman decided to go to college and pursue a business degree at the University of Illinois. Deciding that the university was too big and impersonal, he transferred to Indiana University after a year.

Pledging the Sigma Nu fraternity, Herman lived in the frat house at 322 East Kirkwood Avenue (now the site of the Laughing Planet restaurant). He enjoyed the happy chaos of communal life, and was elected Treasurer his junior year and President his senior year. Herman was graduated with a B.S. in commerce in 1924.

After working for two years as an assistant cashier at Lebanon National Bank, he returned to Bloomington, and obtained his M.A. in economics in 1927. After a year of Ph.D. coursework at the University of Wisconsin, Herman accepted a position as the Field Secretary of the Indiana Banker's Association.

Back again in Indiana, Herman traveled the state, gathering data and talking to bankers about financial problems. The combination of work experience and academic training won him an IU faculty appointment in 1930.
