The Office of the Vice President and General Counsel (OVPGC) serves as legal counsel for the University. We advise the Trustees and University Administration on all legal issues and serve as the point of contact on all legal matters involving the University. Our work includes negotiating and approving contracts and complex transactions where IU is a party; preventing and defending against lawsuits where IU is a party; and interpreting and advising on compliance obligations with federal, state and local laws and regulations, as well as industry standards and internal policies. When necessary, we engage outside legal counsel to assist in these matters.

In addition to these direct legal services, OVPGC is committed to supporting the academic mission of Indiana University. Several of our attorneys are also adjunct faculty in the School of Public Health, the School of Education and at Indiana University's two law schools. We also provide developmental opportunities for law students and new attorneys who may be interested in pursuing careers in higher education.  The Office has internship positions for law students each semester and through the summer that are supported in part in honor of former Indiana University Trustee, Fred Eichhorn.  We also have a vibrant fellowship program, which provides immediate and meaningful employment for new graduates from both the Maurer and McKinney Schools of Law.

A constant goal for OVPGC is to enhance client satisfaction, and easy communication is critical to achieving that goal. The following individuals are available to serve as the primary liaisons to each campus:

In order to ensure the preeminence of Indiana University, the Office of the Vice President and General Counsel (OVPGC) advises, assists, counsels, defends, and solves problems to protect and advance IU and its mission.
