Fall Term

August

  • Receive letter informing you about first group meeting with your assigned advisor.
  • Meet advisor at group meeting during Welcome Week. Schedule first individual advising conference.
  • See advisor about any needed class schedule changes for fall term.

September

  • During first week, attend all classes, including, when possible, any you have waitlisted. At end of week, check class schedule to determine if any waitlisted courses have been added!
  • With your advisor, begin discussion/development of academic/career goals.
  • Expect e-mail messages that contain important advising information from your advisor.
  • Begin exploration of schools/majors/other academic offerings at IUB.
  • Visit and learn about services at the Academic Support Center in your residential neighborhood (located in Briscoe, Forest and Teter).
  • Learn about/access advising resources on computer.
  • Learn requirements of school(s) and major(s) of interest.
  • Visit other student service units such as the Career Development Center, Office of Overseas Study, Student Academic Center, and Student Activities Office.

October–December

  • Attend evening academic programs of interest sponsored by the UD in your residential neighborhood.
  • Schedule advising appointment to plan classes for next term. Read course descriptions.
  • Discuss midterm grades. Plan for successful completion of first term.
  • Continue discussion/development of academic/career goals.
  • Complete spring term academic planning.
  • Continue exploring student service/support units.
  • In late November, enroll in spring classes and report any enrollment problems to advisor.
  • In December, make any needed changes in your spring semester class schedule.

Spring Term

January–February

  • Schedule appointment with advisor.
  • Discuss first term academic performance. Review academic standards—grade point average requirements.
  • Continue to explore schools/majors/minors/certificate programs/student support services/career options.
  • Schedule advising appointment to plan classes for the fall term. Read course descriptions.

March–April

  • Discuss plans for summer school, if appropriate.
  • Confirm school application dates and admission prerequisites. Complete school application when appropriate for your intended major.
  • Discuss midterm grades. Plan for successful completion of spring term.
  • Complete fall term academic plan and reconfirm/update your intended major.
  • In late April, enroll in fall term and report any enrollment problems to your advisor.
  • See your advisor to discuss information you will need for next year (advising, certifying to your intended major, etc.).
