Step 2: Explore Majors, Minors & Certificates

Why should I Explore Majors?

Planning your first courses will go more smoothly if you begin by learning about majors of interest from the many options at IUB and then selecting classes that help you explore the most promising directions.

This list of majors offered at IUB is a great place to start. You may also choose the links on the left if you prefer to browse by school and program.

While your major choice is the most important, minors or certificates can help you develop a more complete academic plan.

As you look over the amazing number of subjects you can study, here are two good questions we would like you to ask:

  • Do I know what my academic interests really are?
  • What major can best help me pursue those interests?

Your answers may lead to you learn more about University Division’s Exploratory resources.

Is it OK to be Exploratory?  When do I have to decide on a major?

Being exploratory is more than just “OK.”  It’s really the most accurate way to describe many students as they start college work.  As long as you are making good progress in fulfilling a range of basic requirements, you can explore for your first year and still be on track for most majors.

Students take many paths in their first year of college. Some students enter IUB certain of their major choice and make good progress toward admission to a program that is best for them.

Many more students begin their college coursework as exploratory and clarify their academic plan in the first two or three semesters.

And a surprising number of students begin with a major they think will be right for them, but sooner or later learn about possibilities they didn’t know existed and become exploratory.

Even if your path fits one of these patterns, it will have twists and turns that are uniquely yours.  The path you take, and the major you choose, will be yours to decide. But your UD advisor will be there to help you explore the possibilities and make good academic progress in your first year of coursework.

How can I learn more about majors that interest me?

The Explore Majors web site shows you how majors relate to your interests, and our Explore your Options information sessions help you go deeper into directions that work for you.
