The volunteer spirit is alive and well at IU Bloomington and in the community. In fact, the Bloomington campus is a major source of volunteers, from college students mentoring local kids through Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Monroe County to faculty members lending their academic know-how to various city commissions. IU students have many opportunities to volunteer, often with programs established through academic units such as the IU Kelley School of Business Civic Leadership Development (CLD) program. More than 500 students participate in CLD, providing local nonprofit agencies with high-quality service while learning the purpose and role of nonprofit agencies in the community. Forty-four percent of U.S. adults volunteer (according to a 2001 survey by Independent Sector), and Bloomington and IU offer an array of organizations where you can put your altruistic urges to work.
