Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov was a celebrated Russian composer whose symphonic suite Scheherazade ranks as one of the most popular orchestral works ever written. Other works demonstrating his unique blend of orchestral sounds include Capriccio Espagnol and the Russian Easter Overture. Rimsky-Korsakov also completed 15 different operas during his lifetime, with two of his most famous pieces found in them: "Song of India", and "The Flight of the Bumblebee". Those two pieces should be well known to trombonists through Tommy Dorsey’s version of the former and Urbie Green’s of the latter. Rimsky-Korsakov died in St Petersburg of a heart attack on June 21, 1908 at the age of 64.

Rimsky-Korsakov's Concerto for Trombone was originally scored for solo trombone and military band, and is one of the most standard concertos for trombone. The hauntingly lyrical second movement showcases the best singing qualities of the trombone, while the outer movements afford the soloist an outlet for the more brilliant, technical possibilities of the instrument.
