Tom Shafer has been staff dramaturg at the Department of Theatre and Drama since 1989, coming to the department from Florida Southern College, where he served for 4 years as an instructor of theatre and director. As dramaturg, he helps select the season, provides research support for previously produced plays, helps develop new work, writes essays for programs, web pages, and Theatre Circle Insights, the newsletter for the departments support group, which he also edits. He also manages some sections of the departments web site. He supports twelve productions a year at the Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center and the Brown County Playhouse.

He is a member of the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas and has presented papers and coordinated sessions at that organizations conferences. Within the Bloomington community, he has served as a member of the Board of School Trustees for the Monroe County Community School Corporation and is currently a member of the board of directors for the Bloomington Playwrights Project.
