Discussion Techniques: Learning by Teaching
Ballantine Hall 347
Students learn more when they have opportunities in class to take an active and cooperative role in constructing knowledge. Furthermore, these active learning moments allow students to practice disciplinary thinking in a low-stakes environment and to receive immediate feedback on their learning from their peers and instructor. Some of the most effective active learning techniques involve a role reversal, where students engage in instructing others. Joan Middendorf (Campus Instructional Consulting) and Leah Savion (Philosophy) will describe the benefits of such activities, which include awareness of prevalent misconceptions, employment of diverse approaches and learning styles, and the enhancement of meta-cognitive skills. Participants will work in thematic groups to find pragmatic applications of these techniques to their disciplines.
