General Resources Supporting an Inclusive Campus Climate

Report on the Status of Minorities at Indiana University—2003 [PDF]
This office ensures access to employment, facilities and programs for all students, staff, faculty, and visitors.
Enhances communication about campus climate through publications such as the Multicultural Resource Guide for Students, and the Understanding International Instructors Brochure.
Important umbrella organization for student information, including offices that focus on Advocates and Mediation, Committee on Personal Safety, Disabled Student Services, Student Activities Office, Student Ethic and Anti–Harassment Programs, and Student Legal Services.
An advocate for students, faculty, and staff, this office provides programs and services that promote diversity, equity, and excellence in the curriculum, student organizations, and cultural centers.
This office provides a number of resources of use to instructors in creating and maintaining respectful, tolerant classrooms. Brochures and guides available include: Understanding Sexual Harassment, Disabled Students in your Classroom, the Resource Guide for Dispute Resolution, Office of Affirmative Action Complaint Procedure Guidelines, and the Diversity Education Resource Guide for Campus and Community Program Planning.
Collaborates with other support offices to consult with and develop diversity education programs for teams and individuals in various academic and non–academic units.
“The mission of the OMA is to help facilitate the academic life of students of color, to promote an environment for celebrating and sustaining the cultural heritage of various groups, and to develop and encourage programming related to diversity issues. The OMA also works with other campus units to help increase the recruitment, retention and graduation of students of color.”

Policy statement.
Provides suggestions how to create a positive environment in the classroom, ensuring diversity, civility, and ethical behavior.
Offering teaching strategies on a variety of topics, several articles provide instructional advice specifically in topics of inclusive classrooms such as civility, disability, and international students.
During orientation week in August, CIC conducts two workshops relating specifically to creating and maintaining inclusive classrooms. “The Associate Instructor Workshop on Campus Climate” provides new graduate instructors with tips on creating an inclusive classroom and teaching to diverse students. “The First Day of Class and Understanding IU Students” workshop provides information on student subcultures at IU and tips on how to reach and motivate different types of students.

Resources for Students
Offers free tutoring, advising, and walk–in academic help in a variety of disciplines.
Student service available through the IU Student Health Center. The site includes a useful resource for instructors entitled, “Dealing with Distressed Students.”
Provides information, services, and referrals for veterans and students with visual, hearing, physical, and learning disabilities.
A one–stop website for student–oriented services, organizations and questions to help undergraduates in “getting started, getting involved, getting support, and getting around.”
An online handbook listing IUB offices, services, and student groups supporting an inclusive campus environment. This guide is published by the Commission on Multicultural Understanding.
Comprehensive program of learning support services including courses for credit, individualized academic assessment and assistance, peer tutoring, supplemental instruction, workshops, and outreach services.
Information, including a searchable directory, about active student organizations at IUB. Depending upon the organization, instructors may be able to arrange field trips, class presentations or direct students with special interests towards these organizations.
Individual tutoring to students working on writing projects for any of their courses, from brainstorming to outlining, revising to polishing the final draft.
