Research Interests
My
main area of research lies in the study of typical and atypical language
development in multicultural/bilingual children, with a particular emphasis
on Spanish-English. As a corollary, I am also interested in monolingual
development in typical and atypical children who speak these two languages.
Particular issues of interest within these areas are: development of
culturally and linguistic valid procedures in monolingual and bilingual
children, first language loss in bilingual children and grammatical
learning in monolingual Spanish and bilingual Spanish-English speaking
typical and atypical children. The age range that I conduct research
with is preschool (2-5 years), although I am interested in earlier and
later language development.
Teaching Responsibilities/Interests
I presently teach one undergraduate and two graduate courses. I teach
the undergraduate course - Speech and Language Diagnostics
- twice a year. In the fall, I teach Atypical language development
and in the spring I teach Multicultural issues. My
teaching interests include monolingual and bilingual child language
development (especially during the preschool years). I also enjoy teaching
assessment and intervention of language impaired children, as well as
issues pertaining to language and culture, and sociolinguistics.
