Teaching Responsibilities/Interests

Photo of Amy CornwellCornwell is the coordinator of the American Sign Language (ASL) program. She has taught all four levels of ASL. Each year she also teaches a beginning level ASL course through the Continuing Studies Program. As the daughter of Deaf parents, she has a personal interest in Deaf culture. As one of Indiana's few certified interpreters, she is frequently called upon to facilitate communication between people who are Deaf and those who hear who do not have ASL skills. Interpreting in situations ranging from the birth of a baby to IU's Commencement services, Cornwell works to break through communication barriers that often exist between Deaf and hearing individuals.
