Ph.D. in Speech and Voice Sciences

The speech and voice science program at IU focuses on select research areas that are compatible with the unique strengths of the faculty and facilities at the university. IU can offer you outstanding training experiences in any of the following areas:

  1. speech perception in normal and hearing-impaired persons
  2. speech production in developing and adult populations
  3. psychophysics of speech and complex non-speech sounds
  4. application of speech technology in speech and hearing disorders
  5. speech fluency in children and adults who stutter

We can also offer exciting research opportunities in the areas of cognitive sciences, linguistics, and neurosciences.

The faculty members in speech and hearing sciences who have major roles in the Ph.D. program in speech and voice sciences are Karen Forrest (speech production), Judith Gierut (phonological development), Larry Humes (speech perception in the hearing impaired), Diane Kewley-Port (speech perception and speech technology), Teri Burnett (voice physiology), Rachel Holt (speech perception), Julie Anderson (speech fluency), Tessa Bent (speech perception).
