Indiana University, Bloomington

Ph.D. in Language Sciences

Rather than trying to cover all areas of the field, the language science program at IU focuses on select areas that are compatible with the unique strengths of our faculty and facilities. Indiana University can offer you superb learning experiences in any of the following areas:

  1. development of syntax and morphology in normally developing and language impaired preschool children;
  2. relations between cognitive factors (such as memory) and language abilities in normally developing and language-impaired children;
  3. language acquisition problems faced by bilingual children,
  4. infant communication development and early word learning,
  5. language and cognitive disorders resulting from stroke, traumatic brain injury, and progressive disorders such as Alzheimers disease, and
  6. development of phonology in normal developing and phonologically disordered children.

At present, the faculty members from our department who have major roles in the Ph.D. program in language sciences include Phil Connell (preschool child language disorders), Raquel Anderson (bilingual language impairment), Laura Murray (adult cognitive and language disorders), Judith Gierut (children's phonological disorders), and Lisa Gershkoff-Stowe (developmental psycholinguistics).
