Requirements

Qualifying Examinations

The qualifying examination will consist of three parts: 1) 2 three-hour written exams; 2) an exploratory paper; 3) and an oral examination. The oral examination will be scheduled after the successful completion of the written examinations. In addition, a written or oral examination may be required in the minor field, at the discretion of the minor department. The qualifying examination may be repeated only once. Qualifying Examinations

Students will take an examination in each of the three areas of concentration. If the exams are sit down, then they will last nine-hours, six-hours, and three hours. The nine-hour exam will cover the student's principal area as reflected by the dissertation topic. The three-hour area will cover the teaching concentration. The six-hour exam will cover the related areas of concentration. Faculty in linguistics have the option of offering take-home exams. If the format is to be take-home, students will have one week to write each portion of the exam and these exams will be taken in series. In either case, the sequence of exams must be completed within 60 days.


Portuguese

REQUIREMENTS

QUALIFYING EXAMINATIONS

The qualifying exam will consist of two written exams of six hours each and an oral exam, if the written exam warrants. Students concentrating in Portuguese will also be examined in Spanish or another approved secondary area of interest. The written examination is 12 hours. A written or oral examination may also be required in the minor field, at the discretion of the minor department. The quailfying examination may be repeated only once. All students will be held responsible for both a literary period and a genre to be chosen from the following lists:

In addition to the Lusophone area, students will normally choose either Spanish, America, or the Spanish Peninsula as a second area. Students should make their selection of areas in consultation with their advisor and the Director of Graduate Studies.
