Graduate Studies

Spotlight

Nick Phillips was awarded Indiana University's distinguished AI Lieber Memorial Teaching Award in 2012.

In September 2012 the Department was awarded a major multi-year grant by the US Department of Education (Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need) which now enables us to recruit outstanding students with extremely competitive fellowship packages. Please see Funding Opportunities for more information on fellowships and teaching assistantships.

The Spanish and Portuguese graduate program offers students both a solid professional preparation and the opportunity for exploration and intellectual growth. The faculty's expertise spans many fields of study and theoretical approaches, and are often informed by multi-disciplinary perspectives. Many of our faculty members hold joint or adjunct appointments or have affiliated status in other departments and programs.

Our graduate students come from a plurality of ethnic and national backgrounds. They receive close mentorship and leave with a solid degree that prepares them for a dynamic academic career as scholars and teachers. The Department offers professional workshops and colloquia on publishing, teaching and interviewing. In addition, regular series of works-in-progress presentations allow graduate students to develop sustained research agendas and ready themselves for conference participation. Travel funds are available to students to present their papers at conferences in the US and abroad.

The excellence of our graduate programs is supported by the institutional resources of Indiana University, which in 2010 were ranked by the Association of College and University Research Libraries as the top US research library. The Main Library holds nearly 7,000,000 volumes and its Hispanic Studies collections are among the best in the nation. The Lilly Library for Rare Books and Manuscripts is a world-renowned collection featuring important texts from Iberia and Latin America.

Bloomington is progressive and diverse college town featuring vibrant music, theater and cinema scenes. Indiana University has one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation, a magnificent setting to pursue a superb graduate education.
