Congratulations to Shiri Noy and IU grad Rashawn Ray for presenting a joint paper at the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The paper examines graduate students’ perceptions of disadvantage in mentorships and was a paper they began as part of their PFF certificate. Aaron Ponce has been selected as one of three young researchers to receive an Award in Immigration Research funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. His will examine the acquisition of English language skills as human capital among first generation immigrants in the United States.
Our graduate students’ impressive string of accomplishments continues. Shiri Noy received a 2012-13 College of Arts and Sciences Dissertation Year Research Fellowship. Tim O’Brien received a 2012-13 College of Arts and Sciences Completion Dissertation Year Research Fellowship. And, Amy Irby-Shasanmi received a 2012-13 American Sociological Association Minority Fellowship. Congratulations to all!
Eric Grollman received first place in the Midwest Sociological Society (MSS) graduate student paper award competition for his paper, “Multiple Forms of Perceived Discrimination and Health Among Adolescents and Young Adults.” The award will be presented at the MSS meetings at a special session on March 30th. Congratulations, Eric!
Todd Beer has been awarded Indiana University's 2012 Lieber Memorial Associate Instructor Award. This prestigious award recognizes the university's most outstanding instructors. We couldn’t be more proud! The award will be presented to Todd later this spring at the university's Founders Day celebration.
Congratulations to Alex Lu, Syndee Knight, Jennifer Caputo, Long Doan for recent paper awards and honorable mentions from American Sociological Association, Society for the Study of Social Problems, and American Society of Criminology for their outstanding research. Also congratulations to former graduate student, Laura Hamilton, Ph.D. 2010, for an Honorable Mention from the ASA Dissertation Award Committee for her dissertation.
Deidre Redmond is the recipient of an IU Social Science Diversity Initiative Travel and Research Grant for Summer 2011.
Alex Lu's paper, "Intersections of Discrimination in Immigration Law: Narrating Chinese Women's Experiences during the Chinese Exclusion Era", has been selected as the winner 2011 Graduate Paper Competition from the ASA Section on Race, Gender and Class.
Todd Beer is the recipient of an ASA/SAGE Teaching Innovations & Professional Development Award to attend the ASA pre-conference workshop on Preparing Future Faculty, hosted by the ASA Section on Teaching and Learning in Sociology.
Eric Grollman was elected as one of two graduate student representatives to the ASA Section on the Sociology of Sexualities.
American Society of Criminology has awarded Syndee Knight co-Third Prize for the Gene Carte Paper Award, in recognition of her outstanding scholarly contribution to the field of criminology: “Trading Spaces: Drug Markets, Homicide, and Economic Context across U. S. Counties.”
Christy Erving was awarded first place in the SSSP Health, Health Policy and Health Services Student Paper Competition.
Jason Blind has been elected graduate student representative for the American Sociological Association's section on Children & Youth.
