Faculty Mentoring Program

The Faculty Mentoring Program (FMP) aligns with one of Strategic Hiring and Support's key challenges: to keep promising minority faculty members at Indiana University.

The FMP was created to help alleviate the sense of isolation many minority faculty feel as they acclimate to a new campus, and is open to any minority faculty member at IUB. At the same time, the FMP is an exicting opportunity for senior faculty members. The informal nature of the program offers faculty mentors unlimited opportunities for professional self-renewal.

As the FMP evolves, we hope it will become a valued complement to existing faculty mentoring programs around campus.

Program Structure

At the start of the academic year, SHS sponsors a social gathering so that new minority faculty can meet informally with potential mentors. SHS manages the matching process, and encourages mentors and mentees meet frequently during the first two semesters. Throughout the year, formal mentoring workshops and meetings may be offered by SHS, the Office of Affirmative Action, and the Dean of Faculties.

The Faculty Mentoring Program is voluntary, and there is no set duration for the mentoring relationship. SHS is grateful to the Office of Institutional Development and Student Affairs for providing each mentor/mentee with a small professional development stipend.
