Transferring

The following checklist includes information for students who may be transferring to or from Indiana University Bloomington.

  • Students should let their former school know about the transfer as soon as possible. This will allow the former school to cancel any processed aid, and allow the new school to review eligibility and process aid correctly. Please be aware that aid from one school to another can vary greatly, due to differing costs of attendance, award requirements, etc.
  • Students who transfer must request that their FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) data be sent to the new school. This may be done by adding the appropriate school code to the FAFSA online (www.fafsa.ed.gov), on a student’s paper Student Aid Report (SAR), or by calling 1-800-433-3243. IU Bloomington’s school code is 001809. Other schools' codes may be found on the FAFSA website (www.fafsa.ed.gov).
  • Indiana state residents will need to make sure that the State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana (SSACI) has the new school listed as their first school choice before a SSACI grant may be awarded to the student at that school. Students can change their school choice online at www.in.gov/ssaci/estudent. Note: If transferring for the spring semester, students should wait until late in the fall semester before changing their school choice online; the change online should be made for term 2 (spring) ONLY.
  • If eligible for CVO (Child of Certain Veteran and Public Safety Officer Supplemental Grant Program), the student will need to complete a new CVO application, and provide the approved application to the new school before the CVO grant can be awarded. CVO applications can be printed online at http://www.in.gov/ssaci/2339.htm.  Note: Students must also file the FAFSA to receive CVO.
  • If a student receives any scholarships or grants from outside sources, each donor should be notified of the transfer to enable them to send future disbursements to the correct school.
  • If transferring from Indiana University Bloomington to another school, the student should contact the new school to request any necessary institutional financial aid applications. (Indiana University Bloomington does not have any additional institutional financial aid applications; the FAFSA is the only necessary application for federal and state aid.)
