| Part of developing cultural competence requires the difficult and often awkward step of engaging in conversations about race, ethnicity and equity. To encourage such conversations and to support their local schools in addressing disproportionality, MSD Perry , with a grant from IPLA, has produced a CD for “Drive Time Learning”. The CD captures a series of conversations on race and cultural competence, held in the spring of 2006, involving community members, teachers and administrators. Issues that figure prominently in the recorded conversations include defining diversity and cultural competence, the difficulty in talking about race, colorblindness and exploring what we can we do to create equity. The CDs were distributed to all professional staff in Perry so that they can listen as they commute, an electronic bulleting board for further conversations is also accessible to all Perry staff. Cultural Competence Drive-Time Learning CD is the first phase of the Bridge Builders Initiative; the development of school based teams charged with developing cultural competence at the building level. Providing professional development to General Education Intervention Teams at all schools in Creative Problem Solving and cultural competence in order to better respond to students’ needs with culturally responsive strategies is another way MSD Perry is addressing issues of equity.
