Admittance to the Indiana University ROTC Strategic Languages and Cultures Program (SLCP) is through a competitive application process. All applications will be reviewed by the Indiana University ROTC SLCP admissions committee. Only twenty-five (25) cadets will be accepted. The SLCP is open only to ROTC cadets who wish to dedicate one year to the intensive study of strategic languages and cultures. The program includes two periods of study: 1) intensive summer study from approximately June 12 or June 19 – August 14, 2009 and 2) full academic year 2009/2010 study at your home institution or by distance education. Cadets must commit to studying their strategic language both in the summer 2009 and the academic year 2009/2010. Applicants must provide proof of their ROTC credentials and have the support of their unit commander. You must be able to attend the summer 2009 language program in its entirety.

The 2009-2010 ROTC Strategic Languages and Cultures Program Application Process is Now Open.
The total number of cadets to be enrolled in this program will be 25. The grant allows Indiana University to award 25 ROTC cadets scholarships for training in strategic languages and cultures. The main elements of the Indiana University ROTC Strategic Languages and Cultures Program (SLCP) are:
Eligible Languages: The SLCP offers instruction in the following languages: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Kazakh, Pashto, Russian, Tajik, Turkmen, Uzbek, and Uyghur. To learn more about the languages go to languages page. Only cadets wishing to study these languages should apply.
Level of Study: The SLCP is designed for cadets who have not studied one of the Indiana University ROTC SLCP strategic languages previously. However, cadets who have studied one of the languages before are welcome to apply but must clearly demonstrate how they will fulfill the one-year language study requirement (e.g. if students wish to enroll in an intermediate level course this summer, is the advanced level offered at their home institution?).
Scholarships: The SLCP will award 25 scholarships to the eligible RPTC cadets. Scholarships will include at least $4,500.00 to be used for the summer 2009 study of the language (tuition, fees, room and board) at Indiana University. In exceptional circumstances, a cadet admitted to the program with demonstrated proficiency in one of the strategic languages will be able to use this summer scholarship in locations other than Indiana University. Cadets who successfully pass the summer 2009 language program will be awarded an additional scholarship to assist them in their language study during the 2009/2010 academic year.
Deadlines: The deadline to apply to the SLCP is March 20, 2009.
Further Information: We encourage all cadets to contact the SLCP if they have questions about the program or their choice of languages. We would be happy to advise applicants on professional prospects in individual languages.
