Art History Association Brown Bag Lecture: Joanna Matuszak, a Ph.D. student in Art History, "Russian Performance Art 1990-2000"
2:00 PM, Fine Arts Room 238
The Brown Bags are a series of informal talks that occur approximately once every month throughout the semester. They are specifically aimed towards graduate students, but faculty are welcome to speak as well. In the past, people have read from papers they are going to give at conferences, papers in progress, or simply ideas/outlines for papers. The general idea is to give students an opportunity to get feedback on their work, whether that be finished or more exploratory in nature. We encourage those in attendance to bring their own lunches (hence the title "Brown Bag"), but typically there are snacks and beverages provided by AHA.
For this Friday's talk, Joanna Matuszak, a Ph.D. student in Art History, will be presenting "Russian Performance Art 1990-2000" on Friday, October 2, 2009 at 2:00 pm in Fine Arts room 238. We welcome anyone interested to attend as it is free and open to the public.

Foreign Language Study Skills Workshop
5:30 PM - 7:30 PM, Ballantine 204
All students taking a language in the Slavic Department (Russian, Serbian/Croatian, Polish, Romanian, Czech, Ukrainian) and Hungarian, Estonian, Finnish, and Yiddish are welcome. Free pizza and soft drinks will be provided. Please RSVP to Jeff Holdeman (jeffhold@indiana.edu) by Sunday evening (Oct. 4) so that enough food can be ordered.
The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures will be offering a free foreign language study skills workshop on Monday evening, Oct. 5, 5:30-7:30 pm (with a break for free pizza and soft drinks!), to all students who are currently taking language classes in the Slavic Department. It is intended for students who are new to Slavic and East European languages and to students who would like to develop their language-learning study skills. During the workshop, led by Slavic Language Coordinator Dr. Jeff Holdeman, topics to be discussed will include:

* student learning styles and their implications
* foreign language teaching methodologies and their implications
* how memory works in language learning
* how to master difficult sounds and words
* the role and mechanics of repetition and review
* effective (and less effective) ways of doing homework, reviewing, and studying
* how to use a textbook and reference books
* how to utilize your instructor
* how to form and run a study group
* how to keep track of vocabulary and grammar
* five-skill language learning
* dealing with grammar concepts and terminology ("everything I forgot from high school English class")
* time management quick tips
* language resources in the department, at IU, and in the region
* common student problems and fears
* Frequently Asked Questions and frequently made mistakes
* much more

Most students who have problems studying foreign languages (or have had bad experiences in the past) simply lack some basic foreign language study skills and concepts, and are usually troubled by special fears and misconceptions. This workshop is designed to share information and tips on improving study skills and habits to ensure productive study time and confidence. It will also give students the opportunity to meet other students in the department who are studying our languages.

7:00 PM, Wylie Hall 005
Director: Usman Saparov
88 minutes; Turkmen, Russian, and German with English subtitles

During World War II, Soviet citizens of German origins in Turkmenistan were deported to Siberia: adults were sent to concentration camps, children to orphanages. “Little Angel, Make Me Happy” (Angelochek, Sdelia Radost) tells the story of the survival of 6-year-old Georg who is left behind in his now-abandoned village. The story touches on the question of the “Motherland.” The film received Grand Prizes at six international film festivals.
