  • CareerOneStop
    This can be a complex site, but it often indexes government jobs.
  • Central Intelligence Agency
    The CIA recruits students with superior foreign language skills to work as intelligence analysts and operatives both in the US and abroad.
  • Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA)
    DIA provides accurate and timely information on ground, naval, air, and missile and space forces around the world. They seek people with strong research, analytical, and technical skills to work as intelligence officers, scientists, engineers, and information technology specialists.
  • Federal Job Source
    This site does not actually post employment opportunitues, but has a long list of links to other government agencies' career pages, as well as links to sites that post job vacancies in DC.
  • Foreign Policy Association
    Has list of job openings at a variety of NGOs that work in international development, including IREX and Freedom House.
  • Government Accountability Office
    The GAO has various teams that work in offices around the US, from which they perform evaluations and audits of other government agencies. The teams include the International Affairs and Trade Team and the Natural Resources and Environment Team.
  • Interagency Language Roundtable
    This agency coordinates and shares information about language-related activities at the Federal government level. Their homepage has a list of links to government agencies and offices that hire individuals with superior foreign language skills.
  • Library of Congress
    "The Library of Congress Junior Fellows Program" allows students or recent graduates to work with primary source materials, organize and document archival collections, produce finding aids and bibliographic records, do bibliographical research; and contribute to the Library's efforts to digitize its historical collections.
  • Making the Difference: Federal Careers in Foreign Langauge -- [PDF]

  • National Virtual Translation Center
    NVTC acts as a governmental clearinghouse for facilitating interagency use of translators by partnering with elements of the U.S. Government, academia, and private industry to identify translator resources and engage their services as virtually-connected linguists and translators. They can work on a full or part time basis or as needed, from home or from designated Government facilities. Visit their website to establish a profile and add yourself to their database.
  • National Security Agency (NSA)
    The NSA is America's cryptologic organization, which coordinates, directs, and performs highly specialized activities to protect U.S. information systems and produce foreign intelligence information. They hire individuals with foreign language skills to serve as translators and analysts.
  • Nonproliferation Graduate Program, Department of Energy (DOE)
    Offers a 14-month paid internship for graduate students interested in exploring a career in nuclear nonproliferation.
  • Roll Call Jobs
    Offered through Roll Call Newspaper, the leading publication for Congressional news and information, Roll Call Jobs is an online job search engine with many U.S. and international job postings from government and nonprofit organizations.
  • United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
    USAID works on international economic growth, agriculture and trade; global health; and democracy, conflict prevention and humanitarian assistance and has offices worldwide.
  • U.S. Department of State
    Has both a domestic civil service and a foreign service branch with postings worldwide with political, economic, management, consular and public affairs specializations. Only the foreign services requires applicants to take and pass the Foreign Service exam.
  • USAJOBS (United States Office of Personnel Management)
    USAJOBS is the Federal Government's official one-stop source for Federal jobs and employment information.
  • U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM)
    OPM is the federal government's Human Resources agency. This page has links to other lists of federal jobs and job search engines.

  • Associates in Rural Development, Inc (ARD)
    ARD works in Eastern Europe and Central Asia on issues such as protecting national parks, assisting agricultural sectors, working to improve infrastructure, institutional development, and information and knowledge management. They employ staff in their Vermont and DC offices and overseas.
  • Carana Corporation
    A consulting firm that provides development solutions to government, private business, individuals, and international donor agencies. They have projects in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union that deal with governance, pension, labor market and electricity reform. Website has list of openings and consultant database.
  • Development Alternatives, Inc.
    This for-profit company offers long-term positions and short- to medium-term technical assistance assignments in developing and transitional economies, as well as jobs in Washington, DC working to support international development offices worldwide.
  • DevNet Jobs.org
    Web page and listserve with extensive list of jobs in UN Agencies, NGOs, Foundations, Funding organizations, Non-Profits, Charities, Banks and Inter-Government Organizations. Limited free access; fee for full access.
  • DPK Consulting
    DPK Consulting provides technical, management, and advisory services to help institutions in developing and transitioning societies operate under transparent rules that safeguard rights of individuals, stimulate economic growth, and guard against unethical or corrupt practices; ensure the efficient and effective delivery of services to the public; and increase citizen participation. They administer programs in Eastern Europe and Russia and Armenia.
  • Cardno's Emerging Markets
    Cardno's Emerging Markets provides development consulting services under donor-funded initiatives such as USAID, DfID, the European Commission, and the World Bank. They focus on Agribusiness and Rural Livelihoods, Financial Sector Services, Healthcare, Private Sector Development, and Public Sector Services. They currently have open positions in their DC office and in Russia and Ukraine.
  • Foundation for International Community Assistance (FINCA)
    FINCA utilizes the village banking method to offer small loans to local groups of entrepreneurs in developing countries. They employ staff in the US and worldwide, including Russia, the Caucasus and Central Asia.
  • International Relief and Development (IRD)
    IRD is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of people in the most economically deprived parts of the world by mobilizing and providing assistance tailored specifically to their needs. They have field offices in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus.
  • OSCE: Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe
    The largest regional security organization in the world with members from Europe, Central Asia and North America. OSCE sponsors a wide range of programs from arms control, preventive diplomacy, and confidence- and security-building measures, to human rights, democratization, election monitoring and economic and environmental security. Their website has an interactive database of vacant positions within OSCE and also with contracting organizations.
  • PAE
    PAE has been providing global government contract services for democratization missions. Currently PAE is recruiting qualified individuals for placement in a database that will be used in hiring Americans to work in various OSCE-contracted positions in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
  • Transitions Online
    This site posts employment opportunities in countries all over Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union in a variety of sectors within international development.
  • Transparency International (TI)
    TI works worldwide to combat corruption by raising awareness of its damaging effects, advocating policy reform, working towards the implementation of multilateral conventions and monitoring compliance by governments, corporations and banks. They also work to increase levels of accountability and transparency within government operations.
  • United Nations (UN)
    This site lists job openings for the entire UN by category. The UN also offers Junior Professional Posts, which are entry level positions that require applicants to take a written exam.
  • United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
    The development arm of the United Nations, the UNDP works in democratic governance, HIV/AIDS prevention, crisis prevention and recovery, management, energy and the environment, and poverty reduction. They offer permanent positions, unpaid internships, and other volunteer opportunities abroad.
  • World Bank
    Works in developing countries worldwide to fight poverty and improve living standards by providing loans, policy advice, technical assistance and knowledge sharing services. They offer a Junior Professional Associates Program for recent bachelor's recipients and a Young Professionals Program for recent master's degree recipients.
  • World Vision
    World Vision is the world's largest Christian international relief and development agency; it periodically has openings for positions in Eastern Europe, Russia and the NIS.

  • American Bar Association Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative (ABA/CEELI)
    ABA/CEELI advances the rule of law in 22 countries in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Their web page lists domestic and international opportunities, mostly for those with a JD, in areas such as combating corruption, criminal law reform, or women's legal issues.
  • Krieg DeVault Law Firm, Indianapolis
    This international business practice serves the increasing needs of clients engaged in international business transactions, whether those needs are in connection with US-based companies engaged in international transactions or with foreign investor's operations in the United States.   • International Center for Not-for-Profit Law
    Works in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union to build a legal framework for civil society, encourage good governance and accountability, public-private partnerships, public participation and advocacy by building local capacity. They offer internships and shorter-term consultant opportunities, in addition to fulltime employment.
  • European Roma Rights Center (ERRC)
    The leading legal advocacy organisation on behalf of Roma in Europe, the ERRC is a public interest law organization which defends the human rights of the Roma (Gypsies) throughout Europe and serves as a legal resource center for advocates working in this field. The ERRC legal defense programme conducts litigation, pursues legal advocacy, and engages in legal training for Roma rights advocates.

  • ACTR-ACCELS
    Lists employment openings in DC and abroad with ACTR-ACCELS and also many funding, research, and study abroad opportunities that they administer.
  • Academy for Educational Development
    AED works in most countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, focusing on improving education, health, and economic opportunities.
  • Alliance for Conflict Transformation (ACT)
    Has a useful job forum that requires a membership fee in order to access. If you'd like to view the treasure trove of conflict resolution jobs that ACT advertises, you can access it for free in the REEI office (Ballantine 565).
  • American International Health Alliance
    This international non-profit health organization has offices in 11 Eastern European and former Soviet countries and works to create partnerships with local health providers as a means for addressing health challenges.
  • American Refugee Committee (ARC)
    ARC is an international nonprofit, nonsectarian organization that has provided multisectoral humanitarian assistance and training to millions of beneficiaries for more than 20 years.
  • Ashoka
    Ashoka's mission is to develop the profession of social entrepreneurship around the world by investing in people. The have projects in several countries in Central Europe.
  • Brookings Institution
    The Brookings Institution, one of Washington's oldest think tanks, is a nonpartisan organization devoted to research, analysis, and public education with an emphasis on economics, foreign policy, governance, and metropolitan policy. They offer positions as conference or research assistants to those with bachelor's degrees.
  • CARE International
    CARE works with poor communities in a number of Eastern European countries to find lasting solutions to poverty. Other areas that they focus on include agriculture and natural resources, education, health and nutrition, small economic activity development, and water, sanitation and environmental health. Their employment resources include a consultants' database and a listing of permanent positions and internships with the organization.
  • Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs
    Hires individuals with bachelors and masters degrees as research assistants, working in areas such as Ethics & International Affairs, Human Rights Initiatives, and Global Policy Innovations.
  • Carnegie Endowment
    This nonprofit organization is dedicated to advancing cooperation between nations and promoting active international engagement by the United States through research, publishing, convening, and creating new institutions and international networks. The Endowment also runs the Carnegie Moscow Center and publishes Foreign Policy, one of the world's leading magazines of international politics and economics.
  • Catholic Relief Services
    In Eastern Europe and the Caucasus, this organization promotes the protection of human dignity and tolerance, the reduction of socio-economic and civic exclusion, and peaceful interactions. Their programs include microfinance loans to small businesses, housing and infrastructure improvements and civic education. One of our alumni worked with CRS in Armenia.
  • Cato Institute
    The Cato Institute seeks to broaden the parameters of public policy debate to include the principles of limited government, individual liberty, free markets and peace. They hire for positions such as trade policy analyst, intern coordinator, and staff writer; vacancies are listed on their website.
  • Center for Citizens' Initiative
    The U.S. Department of State chose this San Francisco-based organization to support the development a sustainable free-market economy in Russia.
  • Center for Defense Information
    CDI is a non-partisan think-tank that focuses on military and security issues.
  • Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)
    CSIS is dedicated to providing world leaders with strategic insight on and policy solutions to current global issues. Their research focuses on three subject areas: challenges to national and international security, building expertise on all of the world's major geographical regions, and developing new methods of governance for the global age. Several of their research projects relate to Eastern Europe and the NIS.
  • Chemonics
    Chemonics is a global consulting firm that promotes economic growth and higher living standards in developing countries. They offer an entry-level training and employment program that targets recent graduates with foreign language skills, including Russian.
  • CHF International
    CHF is an international development non-profit that offers domestic and international positions. They work abroad to create jobs that generate income and build local economies, strengthen businesses through loans, job training and the development of business associations, improve living conditions through housing loans and the repair or construction of public infrastructure, and increase access to education and medical services.
  • Civilian Research and Development Foundation
    This nonprofit has offices in Virginia, Russia and Ukraine and is a public-private partnership that promotes international scientific and technical collaboration between the United States and Eurasia, through grants, technical resources, and training. The positions they offer include grants managers and nonproliferation project managers.
  • Council on Foreign Relations
    With offices in NY and DC, this center for scholars is dedicated to disseminating ideas so that its members, as well as policymakers, journalists, students, and interested people around the world, can better understand the world and the foreign policy choices facing the US and other governments.
  • Counterpart International
    Works around the world, including the former Soviet Union, in the following areas: Humanitarian Assistance, Civil Society, Environment & Conservation, Enterprise Development, Global Health & Nutrition, Food Security & Sustainable Agriculture.
  • HealthRight International
    This organization works to provide essential healthcare and training to healthcare professionals both domestically and abroad. They have offered program management positions in Russia, Moldova, and Romania in the past.
  • EurasiaNet
    Eurasianet is a news web site that focuses on Central Asia and the Caucasus, Russia, the Middle East, and Southwest Asia. Their employment opportunities page lists many jobs in international development related to these regions.
  • Eurasia Foundation
    Eurasia Foundation is an international non-profit organization supporting the development of civil society and private enterprise in the countries of the former Soviet Union.
  • The European Centre for Minority Issues (ECMI)
    Headquartered in Germany, ECMI works to stabilize areas of ethnopolitical conflict and enhance the capacity of civil society actors and governments through action, research and documentation.
  • Foundation for Russian-American Economic Cooperation (FRAEC)
    FRAEC strives to expand economic ties between Russia and the United States, with a special focus on building bridges between the Russian Far East and U.S. West Coast. Their job postings specify that they seek employees with a strong interest in Russia.
  • Foundation for International Community Assistance (FINCA)

    Working all over the world monitoring human rights, HRW offers job opportunities in areas including development and fundraising, or dealing with issues such as land mines, children's rights, or NGOs in the former Soviet Union.

    A search engine for finding internships and jobs with nonprofit organizations, both domestic and international.
  • The Institute for International Education
    The Institute's goals are to promote closer educational relations between the people of the U.S. and other countries. They administer the Fulbright programs and have offices in NY and DC, as well as several other US locations.
  • International Crisis Group
    This organization has projects in the Balkans, the Caucasus and Moldova that focus on democratisation, conflict resolution, refugee return, the economy and the need for accelerated economic and structural reform. In Central Asia its offices focus on the region’s main security challenges: drug smuggling, border and resource disputes, corruption, extremism and heavy-handed repression of opponents.
  • International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES)
    IFES works in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe to provide targeted technical assistance in strengthening transitional democracies. They hire specialists in rule of law, civil society, good governance, election administration, applied research, human rights, gender issues and public information technology solutions.
  • International Organization for Migration (IOM)
    IOM helps facilitate migration, combats human trafficking, help provide health services to migrants and work to build local capacity. Web site advertises vacant positions at headquarters in Brussels and at posts around the world.
  • International Rescue Committee
    Volunteer and employment opportunities in humanitarian aid domestically and abroad. Sometimes they have positions in the Balkans and the Caucasus.
  • IntJobs.org
    Website posts worldwide job vacancies at numerous large international organizations; organized by country, organization and type.
  • IREX
    IREX is an international nonprofit organization specializing in education, independent media, Internet development, and civil society programs. Job and individual internship openings are listed on their website.
  • MacArthur Foundation
    This private, independent grantmaking institution is dedicated to helping groups and individuals foster lasting improvement in the human condition. They maintain a list of openings in their domestic and international offices, including one in Moscow.
  • Mental Disability Advocacy Center (MDAC)
    Promotes and protects the rights of people with mental health problems and/or intellectual disabilities in 28 countries of central and eastern Europe, NIS and Central Asia. Posts employment and internship opportunities.
  • Mercy Corps
    Works in the Balkans, the Caucasus, and Central Asia to provide humanitarian aid, assist countries in transition with combating civil, religious and ethnic conflict, and build strategic partnerships with in-country organizations to strengthen leadership and institutional capacity. Website posts current internship and job opportunities.
  • National Democratic Institute
    NDI works in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union to strengthen and expand democracy by collaborating with local citizens to build political and civic organizations, safeguard elections, and to promote citizen participation, openness and accountability in government. Two recent REEI grads work here.
  • Open Society Institute (OSI)
    OSI is a private grantmaking foundation based in New York City that implements a range of initiatives that aim to promote open societies by shaping government policy and supporting education, media, public health, and human and women's rights, as well as social, legal, and economic reform. They have domestic and international positions.
  • Project Harmony
    Project Harmony is a Vermont-based nonprofit that works in the areas of professional, community and educational development and extending the use of Internet technology in the countries of the former Soviet Union. Job postings for positions in Vermont, and internationally in Russia, Ukraine, and the Caucasus.
  • Project on Ethnic Relations (PER)
    PER is dedicated to preventing ethnic conflict in Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the former Soviet Union. They conduct high-level intervention and dialogue and have served as a neutral mediator in several major disputes in the region. PER also conducts programs of training, education, and research at international, national, and community levels, focusing on issues such as Roma rights.
  • RAND
    The RAND Corporation works with the public and private sectors to provide analysis and solutions for challenges facing the world, including the social and economic issues of education, poverty, crime, and the environment, as well as national security issues. They hire recent graduates as research associates and for administrative positions.
  • The Stanley Foundation
    The Stanley Foundation is a nonprofit organization located in Iowa that promotes constructive dialogue and cooperative action on critical international issues. They have several programs involving Eastern Europe and Russia, and a few recent IU grads have obtained jobs there.
  • Tahoe-Baikal Institute
    Helps preserve Lake Tahoe in California and Lake Baikal in Siberia, as well as other significant and threatened natural areas around the world through environmental education programs, research, and international exchanges of students, scholars, and practitioners in science, policy, economics, and other related disciplines. Web site lists jobs and internships with their organization and with other related organizations.
  • Winrock International
    A nonprofit organization that matches innovative approaches in agriculture, natural resources management, clean energy, and leadership development with the unique needs of its partners. Currently website lists only domestic positions, but they do periodically run programs in countries of the former Soviet Union.
  • World Learning
    This nonprofit organization has four program units -- The Experiment in International Living, School for International Training (SIT), World Learning for International Development, and World Learning for Business. They are a leader in the fields of international exchange, study abroad, sustainable development, teacher education, language training, peacebuilding, and NGO management.
  • The Urban Institute
    This independent non-profit, non-partisan policy research and technical assistance organization offers research assistant positions for individuals with bachelors and masters degrees in disciplines such as economics, sociology, public policy, math and other related fields. Several REEI alumni work with the Urban Institute, a USAID contractor.

  • Alfa Fellowship Program
    Alfa Bank offers a year-long program that includes three to six months of Russian-language training. Designed for those with graduate degree or equivalent training and 2 years of experience in business administration, economics, journalism, law, public policy or government, the program aims to provide experts in the U.S. with direct, meaningful experience in the modern business, government, public policy and cultural environment of the New Russia.
  • Cleveland World Trade Center
    This organization works in international business development to generate revenues, increase cost competitiveness, create jobs and support the economic development of the Northeast Ohio region. Offers unpaid internships.
  • Cummins Engines
    This company manufactures and distributes large service engines and related technologies and has offices in the U.S. and the former Soviet Union.
  • Indiana Department of Commerce
    The Indiana Department of Commerce offers a wide range of employment opportunities in the state in areas such as business development, community development, international trade and tourism.
  • International Center of Indianapolis
    This nonprofit organization strives to help newcomers become productive by providing and/or identifying helpful services, enhancing local understanding of diverse cultures through collaborations, capacity building and program development, and facilitating communication and creating opportunities for international exchange. They do not list job openings on their page; contact them directly.
  • International Trade Administration (Carmel, Ind.)
    Interested in assisting U.S. businesses in competing globally? The International Trade Administration is the largest Federal agency helping U.S. firms compete in the global economy by promoting international trade. Their database lists domestic and international positions, including openings at their office in Carmel, Indiana.
  • LTS Corporation
    This consulting firm, among its many programs, provides consultants to the Department of Health and Human Services for work on projects in Romania and also administers grants for HIV/AIDS and biodefense at the National Institutes of Health with positions that involve programs in Russia and other countries of the former Soviet Union.
  • Management Systems International (MSI)
    MSI is a woman-owned consulting firm located in Washington, D.C. and serving worldwide clients that include the US Government, multilateral agencies, non-profit organizations, universitites, foreign governments and private corporations. MSI provides management consulting services to organizations and agencies in a number of areas of expertise and application areas.
  • Russian-American Chamber of Commerce
    This nonprofit trade association is dedicated to facilitating and providing knowledge relating to U.S. trade, investment and commerce in the Russian marketplace. They maintain ties with government officials in the U.S. and Russia; hold meetings that build business relations through introductions and the dissemination of business analysis and information; and promote the exchange of ideas on successful strategies for doing business in Russia. They offer year-round internships at their Leadville, Colorado facility.
  • Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC)
    A diversified high-technology research and engineering company based in San Diego, California with frequent job listings related to Eastern Europe and Russia.
  • SRA International, Inc.
    SRA is a leading provider of information technology services and solutions to clients in national security, civil government, and health care and public health. They work to provide business solutions for environmental strategies, conflict management and dispute resolution, enterprise architecture, network operations and management, enterprise systems management, and wireless integration.

Federal Government Internships

    This can be a complex site, but it often indexes government jobs.
  • Center for Defense Information
    CDI is a non-partisan think-tank that focuses on military and security issues that offers some paid internships in areas such as nuclear/space security/missile defense research, military policy/terrorism/Middle East research, public affairs/editing, computers, television, or Chinese-language journalism.
  • Central Intelligence Agency
    The CIA offers paid internships in Washington, DC to students in a variety of majors in many fields within the CIA.
  • Defense Intelligence Agency
    DIA provides accurate and timely information on ground, naval, air, and missile and space forces around the world. They seek people with strong research, analytical, and technical skills to work as intelligence officers, scientists, engineers, and information technology specialists. Offers paid summer internships.
  • Department of Energy
    Offers a new two-year corporate entry-level developmental program that allows participants to work and take training courses, focusing on either science/engineering or business.

  • Government Accountability Office
    Offers paid internships in their offices around the US, through which interns can gain an understanding of the GAO's evaluation and auditing work. Students can apply to work on any of their teams, including the International Affairs and Trade Team and the Natural Resources and Environment Team.
  • Library of Congress
    "The Library of Congress Junior Fellows Program" allows students or recent graduates to work with primary source materials, organize and document archival collections, produce finding aids and bibliographic records, do bibliographical research; and contribute to the Library's efforts to digitize its historical collections.
  • National Nuclear Security Administration Nonproliferation Graduate Program
    Offers a 14-month graduate internship program for students interested in exploring a career in nuclear nonproliferation. Participants receive a salary for the duration of the program.
  • Office of Personnel Management (OPM)
    OPM is the federal government's Human Resources agency. This page has links to other lists of federal jobs and job search engines.

  • U.S. Department of State
    Numerous REEI grad students have completed internships in US embassies abroad, working either as political or public affairs interns, combining foreign language practice with learning about the social and political conditions in countries in Eastern Europe or Central Asia. (Deadline for Summer internships is November 1.)
  • U.S. Agency for International Development
    USAID works on international economic growth, agriculture and trade; global health; and democracy, conflict prevention and humanitarian assistance and has offices worldwide.
  • Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars
    Offers students internships as research assistants in areas such as development, financial management and at the Kennan Institute, which focuses on Russia and surrounding states.

Non- profit Internships

The following organizations frequently offer internship opportunities to students and recent graduates.

  • Academy for Educational Development
    AED works in most countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, focusing on improving education, health, and economic opportunities. They offer paid and unpaid internships on an on-going basis.
  • Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development
    ACTED offers international internships. They work on Emergency Relief, Food Security, Health and populations, Economic Development, Natural Disaster Prevention and Cultural promotion in Central Asia and Eastern Europe.
  • Alfa Fellowship Program
    Alfa Bank offers a year-long program that includes three to six months of Russian-language training. Designed for those with graduate degree or equivalent training and 2 years of experience in business administration, economics, journalism, law, public policy or government, the program aims to provide experts in the U.S. with direct, meaningful experience in the modern business, government, public policy and cultural environment of the New Russia.
  • American Councils for International Education, ACTR-ACCELS
    ACTR implements programs in education, community outreach, and scholarly research and sometimes offers internships at their DC office. (Internships are listed under employment)
  • Angel Coalition
    This network of over 40 Russian nongovernmental organizations works to combat the trafficking of women and children for the purposes of sexual exploitation abroad. They offer internships in legal support and research, grantwriting, graphic design, translating; 1-6 months in Russia
  • The Atlantic Council - John A. Baker Internship Program
    Offers unpaid internships in DC working on issues such as global security and transformation in the newly independent Slavic and Eurasian states.
  • Baikal Environmental Wave
    This environmental NGO is located in Irkutsk and works to promote sustainable environmental practices in Russia by educating Russians about the existing environmental problems and risks and lobbying local and national lawmakers. They provide unpaid internships year-round and can assist interns with housing.
  • Brookings Institution
    Offers unpaid internships both in the various departments of the institute and also assisting researchers, in fields such as economics, governance and foreign relations.
  • Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs
    Offers internships assisting scholars with research in areas such as Ethics & International Affairs, Human Rights Initiatives, and Global Policy Innovations. Typical intern responsibilities include conducting research tasks, maintaining and collecting information on foundations and fundraising, proofreading and fact-checking written work, and assisting with administrative duties for seminars and conferences.
  • Catholic Relief Services
    In Eastern Europe and the Caucasus, this organization promotes the protection of human dignity and tolerance, the reduction of socio-economic and civic exclusion, and peaceful interactions. Their programs include microfinance loans to small businesses, housing and infrastructure improvements and civic education.
  • Center for Interethnic Cooperation
    This center works mainly in educating ethnic minority leaders about their rights and enforcing cooperation between the state and ethnic minorities. Unpaid interns perform duties such as translating from Russian to English, communicating with English-speaking partner organizations, assisting with conference and seminar preparation, and helping to maintain their English-language web page.
  • Civilian Research and Development Foundation
    CRDF promotes scientific collaboration between the US and the countries of the Former Soviet Union. They offer paid internships that may involve providing research assistance, assisting with the review of research proposals or with financial administration of grants and contract management.
  • Earth Island Institute
    The Institute, which is based in San Francisco, develops and supports projects that counteract threats to the biological and cultural diversity that sustain the environment. Website lists a number of internship opportunities in areas such as editing, trail building near Lake Baikal, or wilderness training.
  • EastWest Institute
    This non-profit organization works to build civil society in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. They offer several internships in their NY office.
  • Eurasia Foundation
    Eurasia Foundation is an international non-profit organization supporting the development of civil society and private enterprise in the countries of the former Soviet Union.
  • European American Business Council
    The Council serves in an advocacy role on behalf of European and American companies engaged in Trans-Atlantic trade and investment. Internship opportunities are not listed on their website.
  • The Foundation for Russian American Economic Cooperation
    FRAEC often has internship opportunities available depending on the needs of each program, and internship tasks can include research and report writing, writing for FRAEC's weekly News Digest, or assisting with events and member services.
  • Freedom House
    Freedom House offers internships in their NY office and abroad that support their global goals of evaluating human rights conditions, sponsoring public education campaigns, facilitating training and free market reforms, and providing support for the rule of law, free media, and effective local governance. Freedom House arranged an internship in Serbia for a past REEI grad student for which they covered housing and some travel costs.
  • Human Rights Watch
    Offers internships in their US and London offices, in areas including development and fundraising, or dealing with issues such as land mines, children's rights, or NGOs in the former Soviet Union.
  • Idealist.org
    A search engine for finding internships and jobs with nonprofit organizations, both domestic and international.
  • Institute for Humane Studies
    Lists summer opportunities with the Institute and also maintains a small database of available internships with other organizations.
  • Institute for Women's Policy Research
    IWPR is a public policy research organization that offers internships in their DC office in Research, Communications and Outreach, and Development. Internships provide a modest stipend.
  • International Fund for Agricultural Development
    IFAD works to encourage agricultural development through loans, grants and technical assistance as a means of increasing economic development and eradicating poverty. They offer partially-paid internships.
  • International Research and Exchanges Board
    Internships do not seem to be listed clearly on their site. Contact them directly.
  • ISAR
    ISAR: Resources for Environmental Activists supports practical and collaborative solutions to the environmental threats faced by communities in the former Soviet Union by providing training, technical, and informational resources to individuals and organizations working on environmental issues in the region. Internship opportunities are listed on their website.
  • MiraMed Internship Program
    MiraMed is a nonprofit organization located in Russia that provides internship opportunities working on women's rights, prevention of international sexual trafficking, social adaptation of orphans, and computer education. Internships are unpaid, but the program provides housing, orientation and training.
  • National Democratic Institute
    NDI works in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union to strengthen democracy by collaborating with local citizens to build political and civic organizations, safeguard elections, and to promote citizen participation, openness and accountability in government. They offer paid internships in their DC office; two recent REEI grads work there.
  • National Endowment for Democracy
    This non-profit organization works to strengthen democratic institutions around the world through nongovernmental efforts, such as working with a Ukrainian NGO to train future Ukrainian leaders. Their website lists a number of different internships in their DC office.
  • Organization for Security & Cooperation in Europe (OSCE)
    Offers unpaid internships in their offices and centres in Western and Eastern Europe in areas including Economic and Environmental Activities, Conflict Prevention, and Management and Finance.
  • RAND
    The RAND Corporation works with the public and private sectors to provide analysis and solutions for challenges facing the world, including the social and economic issues of education, poverty, crime, and the environment,as well as national security issues. They hire recent graduates as research associates and for administrative positions.
  • Search for Common Ground
    Works towards conflict resolution, prevention and transformation by focusing on mediation and training people in mediation skills, strengthening the capacity of individuals, organisations, and institutions to respond to conflicts, and court-based mediation, including a project in Ukraine. Offers internships in their DC offices working in areas such as web design, communications/public relations, or researching responses to terrorism in the US.
  • SEAF (Small Enterprise Assistance Funds)
    SEAF provides business and management services and loans to local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in underserved markets, including those in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Sometimes offers international internships.
  • Tahoe-Baikal Institute
    Helps preserve Lake Tahoe in California and Lake Baikal in Siberia, as well as other significant and threatened natural areas around the world through environmental education programs, research, and international exchanges of students, scholars, and practitioners in science, policy, economics, and other related disciplines. Web site lists jobs and internships with their organization and with other related organizations.
  • Transatlantic Partners Against Aids
    A non-governmental organization that works to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS in Russia, Ukraine and their neighboring countries. They offer unpaid internships in their NY office.
  • Transparency International (TI)
    TI works worldwide to combat corruption by raising awareness of its damaging effects, advocating policy reform, working towards the implementation of multilateral conventions and monitoring compliance by governments, corporations and banks. They are currently offering several internships at their headquarters in Berlin.
  • Try Ukraine
    For a minimum fee the program will assist people in finding internships or English teaching opportunities in Ukraine. In the past, this organization successfully placed an REEI grad student with an anti-trafficking NGO in Kyiv.
  • The Urban Institute
    Offers students paid positions as Research Assistants, who assist senior researchers in policy areas such as housing, welfare, population studies, health, and education policy.
  • Washington Internship Program
    For a fee, the program assists students in finding 'high-profile' internships in Washington, D.C. and provides help in finding housing, and other part-time employment during the internship.
