Phlegme was formed in 2012 as a venue for talking about phonetics at IU. Our regular members include students and faculty from Linguistics, Second Language Studies, Speech and Hearing Sciences, Spanish and Portuguese, and other departments across campus. Meetings, which occur weekly, take the form of "journal club", a practice talk, a brainstorming session, or anything else the leader for that week wishes to do.
One goal of the group is to make the weekly discussions accessible to people who are less familiar with phonetics. This format gives more experienced phoneticians an opportunity to practice explaining what they think they know, and non-phoneticians a chance to ask questions about phonetics in a casual environment.
Our weekly schedule is maintained on this website. All meetings are open to the public. Our meeting time and location for Fall 2014 is Wednesday 12:30 to 2:00 PM in Memorial Hall 317A. We also communicate via a weekly e-mail reminder, and an Oncourse page from which all presentation materials and articles we discuss can be downloaded. Please contact Jeff Holliday if you would like more information about the group or would like to be added to the e-mail list or the Oncourse page.
