Message from the Provost

September 4, 2013

It was a busy and rewarding summer for the IU Bloomington community, with many notable academic achievements throughout our schools and units.

As we begin the new semester, I want to share an important and exciting initiative to envision and guide the future of our campus.

The IU Bloomington Strategic Planning Committee, made up of more than 120 faculty, librarians, staff and students, will be meeting throughout the semester to consider how we can best ensure a third century of excellence at IU Bloomington.

The committee will address these central questions:

  • What is the most compelling case for a residential, research-intensive campus at a public university, now and in the future?
  • How does IU Bloomington stand out among all residential, research-intensive campuses?
  • How can our campus-level resources best facilitate and strengthen our commitment to academic excellence?

Teams will look specifically at issues involved with research; faculty excellence; graduate education; the undergraduate experience; international initiatives, both with respect to students and to programs and facilities; and interdisciplinary initiatives in the realms of STIM (science, technology, informatics, and math), humanities and the arts, health sciences, and design.

Throughout the process, committee members will be seeking insight and ideas from the broad IU Bloomington community. We have created a website, plan.indiana.edu, dedicated to updating the community on the teams’ discussions. Meeting summaries will be posted here, along with background information on the university-level context for strategic planning, and the national and international discussions that frame higher education today. When the committee completes its draft report in the spring, we will post and distribute it widely for community consideration.

All IU Bloomington community members are urged to bring their thoughtfulness and vision to this forward-looking initiative. Your general comments are welcome at iub-plan@oncourse.iu.edu. You can also reach each of the teams using the email addresses listed online at plan.indiana.edu. Team membership is listed on the site as well, and you are welcome to contact team chairs directly.

Your contributions will be a vital component of this campus-wide planning process. We need great minds on these crucial and timely questions, and we eagerly seek your good ideas.
