Constructing Our Future: Exploring The Values, Strategic Processes and Change Mechanisms
of Work-Life Policies

This workshop explored the values, best practices and strategic processes that frame successful work-life
policies in the academy. The goal was to gain a better understanding of how Indiana University can devise
effective work-life policies and programming that are appropriate to various campuses, fiscally responsible and useful in recruiting as well as retaining the best students, faculty and staff.

Keynote Speakers
Joan Girgus

Joan Girgus is currently a Professor of Psychology at Princeton University and Special Assistant to the Dean of the Faculty for gender issues.

Since 1993, Girgus has been one of the principal organizers of the Pew Higher Education Roundtable, the Knight Collaborative, and now The Learning Alliance for Higher Education, working with a broad range of colleges and universities to identify “best practices” for academic restructuring. From 1987-99, Girgus directed the Pew Science Program, a national program to improve undergraduate science education sponsored by the Pew Charitable Trusts, which gave grants to consortia of colleges and universities for collaborative projects.

Ellen Ernst Kossek

Ellen Ernst Kossek is a University Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University’s School of Human Resources & Labor Relations with a joint courtesy appointment in the Management Department. Dr. Kossek is Associate Director of the Center for Work, Family Health and Stress and is a founding co- PI and member of the U.S. National Institutes of Health National Work, Family and Health Network and a founding co-editor of the Sloan Work-Family Encyclopedia. She is also Chair of the PhD. Program Committee for the School of Human Resources & Labor Relations.
