Radiation Safety - Indianapolis

Getting Started

In order use radioactive material and radiation-producing devices, researchers need to fulfill a series of requirements presented below:

1. New User Authorization

Every individual who wishes to be an authorized user of radioactive material must submit an A-3 Form - Authorization to Use Radioactive Materials. This form must be signed by both the individual seeking authorization and by the Permit Holder (PH) under which he/she will be working. This form is available on the Forms page.

Once this form is submitted and reviewed by our office, an email will be sent outlining the training that will be required before full authorization is granted. This training may include the Radiation Safety Orientation and/or the Radiation Safety Course.

To view schedule and register, see the Radiation Safety Training Sessions page.

2. Initial Radiation Safety Training

All new radioactive material users need to attend the Radiation Safety Orientation. This orientation reviews the fundamentals of radiation safety and emphasizes procedures that are specific to the University. Once an individual submits an A-3 Form - Authorization to Use Radioactive Materials he/she will receive notification to register for the next orientation. This form is available on the Forms page.

The Radiation Safety Course covers the fundamental principles of radiation safety. It is a 10-hour course, which is offered three to four times per year, to individuals will little or no previous experience handling radioactive materials. Individuals that have submitted an A-3 Form - Authorization to Use Radioactive Materials will be notified if they need this additional training. This form is available on the Forms page.

To view schedule and register, see the Radiation Safety Training Sessions page.

3. New Permit Application

All individuals requesting a Radionuclide Use Permit must apply using the appropriate A-1 Form. The appropriate form is dependent on the type of research being conducted. Additional forms (e.g., A-3, A-5, etc.) or other information may be required in conjunction with the application. These forms as well as additional information about the application process is available on the Forms page.
