Animal Care and Use Protocols expire three (3) years from the date approved. A renewal should be submitted several months prior to expiration to avoid a lapse in coverage. Under no circumstances will the BIACUC "extend" a protocol beyond its expiration date.
The BIACUC office will send a courtesy notice to the Principal Investigator 5-6 months prior to expiration, but it is the PI's responsibility to track each protocol expiration date and submit a renewal well in advance. A lapse in protocol coverage will suspend animal research activity for that study and is subject to reporting to NIH and other granting agencies.
Animal Care and Use Protocols must be updated annually. This report provides the committee with an update on the status of the approved study and verifies that all work has been conducted in accordance with the protocol. The BIACUC office will email the PI an Annual Review form prior to the 1st and the 2nd approval date anniversaries. This form must be completed and returned prior to the due date printed on the front.
