Dr. Vernon G. Smith
Dr. Vernon G. Smith is an associate professor at Indiana University Northwest with an Ed. D in Elementary Education and Elementary Administration. Prior to 1991 he served as an adjunct professor in School of Education at I.U. Northwest and Purdue Calumet. He served as an elementary science and math teacher, a resource teacher and as an elementary principal in the Gary Community School Corporation. Currently he is the Coordinator of the Educational Leadership Program teaching elementary and secondary administration classes. He has completed and published research in the areas of self-esteem, African American male academic achievement, educational leadership and parental involvement, He is the recipient of over 140 awards and citations and has been listed in numerous editions of Who’s Who and similar national or international publications. Dr. Smith also served 18 years as a Gary City Councilman (being elected to the presidency five times) and is presently an Indiana State Representative. He was first elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 1990.
