The Peter & Iona Opie Collection of Folklore and Related Topics

Peter and Iona Opie are essentially folklorists working within a tradition of children's literature. In their landmark studies, The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes (1952) and The Lore and Language of Schoolchildren (1959), as in their subsequent work, they have recorded the folklore of Childhood. They did so directly from the lives of contemporary children as well as from rare and little known books for children, often extending their references to obscure, scholarly works of folklore intended clearly for adult and academic reading. While their great collection of children's books is in the Bodleian Library, Oxford University, the actual foundation upon which so much of their scholarship rests is in this collection containing approximately 1200 titles.
