How to export formant information from WaveSurfer to MS Excel

1. Open the soundfile in WaveSurfer.

2. Create Formant Plot (Right click à Create Pane à Formant Plot)

3. Save the information (Right click à Save Date File)

4. Open the saved file in MS Excel (File à Open. Note that you have to change the files of type to “All Files”.)

5. You will see “Text Import Wizard – Step 1 of 3” window. Check “Delimited” and click “Next”.

6. In “Delimiters” box, check “Tab” and “Space” and click “Next”.

7. In “Column data formant” box, “General” should be checked. Click “Next”.

8. Columns A to D correspond to F1 values to F4 values. You don’t need Columns E to H right now (cf. they are bandwidths of F1 to F4) . So remove them.

9. Insert a column before Column A. In Row 1-Column A, write down “=0.049/2”.

10. In Row2-Column A, write down “=A1+0.01”. Then, drag this cell down to the cell displaying formant values. The information in Column A is the time stamp of the formant values.

P.S) 0.049 is Analysis window length and 0.01 is Frame interval (Check this information under “Formants” in “Properties”. Again Right Click for finding “Properties”.)
