Included here are databases available on the Internet that are related to the study of human sexuality, gender, and reproduction, and for which there is no charge to access.

  • Bibliography of the History of Western Sexuality, 1700-1945. This database contains 16,600 titles of the non-belletristic primary and secondary literature of the history of sexuality in Europe and Northern America from 1700 to 1945. It also includes titles of antique sexual history, of the history of sexuality of the middle ages and contemporary times, and of non-Western societies.

  • Cork Database, Project Cork Institute, Dartmouth Medical School, Hanover, New Hampshire. This online database covers alcohol and substance abuse, including materials on substance abuse and sexuality.

  • ERIC Database, U.S. Department of Education. Individual ERIC Clearinghouses offer free access to all or parts of the ERIC database of educational documents and articles, including those related to sex education.

  • ETOH, NIAAA Alcohol and Alcohol Problems Science Database. Search this comprehensive online catalog of biomedical and behavioral research related to alcohol use, including studies on use and sexual behavior.

  • Human Relations Area Files (HRAF), Yale University. A database of full-text ethnographies on some 400 ethnic, cultural, religious, and national groups worldwide, eHRAF Collection of Ethnography. Subject codes for accessing texts in this electronic collection include: Sex (830), Reproduction (840) and Sex Training (864). The Centre for Social Anthropology, U. of Kent at Canterbury, UK, makes available the Ethnographic Atlas. Search the databases for Sexual Practices and/or Marriage Practices. A list of subject terms to use in searching for human sexuality topics is included.

  • Feminae: Medieval Women and Gender Index , Margaret Schaus, Reference Librarian, Haverford College, Haverford, PA

  • Medline and NLM Indexes, National Library of Medicine.
    PubMed provides access to MEDLINE and Pre-MEDLINE. Citations include pre-computed sets of related articles and linkages to publishers' sites for full-text. Some 100 journals are available (some only by subscription). Search by keyword, by author (ex. Smith JB), or by journal title or its MEDLINE abbreviation. Internet Grateful Med provides access to MEDLINE, Pre-MEDLINE, AIDSLINE, DIRLINE, and other NLM databases with full Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) search functionality. It also links to NLM's document delivery service, Loansome Doc. Indiana University faculty and students also can access MEDLINE, BIOETHICS LINE, CANCERLIT, and CINAHL (Nursing and Allied Health) through the Indiana University OVID Database System.

  • National Library of Medicine Gateway. The NLM Gateway is a Web-based system that lets users search simultaneously in multiple retrieval systems at the U.S. National Library of Medicine(NLM). It allows users of NLM services to initiate searches from one Web interface, providing "one-stop searching" for many of NLM's information resources or databases.

  • POPLINE, Johns Hopkins University. Makes available the most recent records from the POPLINE database on population, family planning, and related health issues.

  • Population Index, Princeton University. Covers materials related to fertility and research methodology. Publication types include monographs, journal articles, working papers, dissertations, etc., since 1986. The database can be searched by author, subject, geographic region, or year.

  • Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). SAMSHA maintains a database of research literature dealing with sociocultural aspects of alcohol and substance abuse prevention. It includes studies relating to sexual behavior.
