Specialties/Research Interests: Cross-cultural and interlanguage pragmatics, second language and cross-cultural humor, humor and politeness, bilingualism and identity, second language teaching methodology and assessment.
Current projects: ““I joke you don’t”: Second language humor and intercultural identity construction” an article to appear in Language Learning and Language Teaching Series, John Benjamins; an article-length study on processing second language humor; an article-length study on assessment of reading and listening comprehension.
Courses taught: This is my second year at IU and I am teaching an intermediate Russian language course and a graduate seminar on Russian language teaching methodology. Last year I taught a course of beginning Russian language and a survey of contemporary Russian culture. Prior to my work at IU, I taught all levels of Russian language, courses in pedagogy and second language acquisition, as well as Russian linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania, Bryn Mawr College, Middlebury Summer School, and the University of Maryland. Some of the courses I have taught are: Identity and Second Language Acquisition; Second Language Teaching Methodology; Structure of Russian Language; Old-Church Slavonic; History of Russian Language; Russia from the 9th through 21st Centuries: In Search of Identity; Russian Modernism: Literature, Music, and Visual Arts.
