Speaker
Eva Olin, Chair -
eolinatindiana.edu

The mission of the speaker committee is to promote environmental discussion among its membership.  The committee works to organize members' ideas and the resources of the EMA to utilize faculty expertise and bring outside speakers to SPEA who can contribute to our education as environmental professionals.  Further, the committee works to encourage its members to share their knowledge with each other through discourse on the environmental issues of the day.

Special Initiatives
Jenna Morrison, Chair - jm98atindiana.edu

The Special Initiatives Committee will pursue projects to improve environmental awareness and host events to encourage participation from members of the SPEA and Bloomington community.  Currently, the committee has several initiatives:
  • Backyard Habitat – We maintain landscaped beds outside of SPEA with native Indiana prairie and wildflower species.  This fall our site was certified by the National Wildlife Federation and this spring we will be labeling several species with permanent signs.
  • Adopt-A-Tail – We conduct trail maintenance and litter clean up at Griffy Lake Nature Preserve several times a semester.
  • Adopt-A-Road – We conduct litter clean up along High Street (between 3rd Street and Moore’s Pike). Monroe County Solid Waste Management District provides EMA with clean up supplies.
  • SPEA Sustainability – We host environmental awareness events at SPEA and work to implement policies and programs to make SPEA more sustainable.
    • In 2007, we reviewed SPEA’s recycling program and surveyed the status
of bins around the building.  Next we created a proposal for new bins
and in February 2008, our proposal was accepted by SPEA administrators!
We are now helping to set up the bins and increase recycling
      awareness.
  • EMA-Bloomington Connection - We host environmental events and volunteer for different environmental causes in Bloomington.
