My research is in neutron scattering on magnetic model systems like spin liquids, spin ice and low dimensional systems. With these materials interests in mind I usually perform neutron experiment on cold source spectrometers to study the spin-spin correlations (both static and dynamic) within the sample at a fraction of a degree above absolute zero.
I got my physics undergraduate degree at Warwick University (1988-91) and returned in 1992 to start my Ph.D. after gaining a Masters at Keele University. During this period I worked in magnets closely related to high temperature superconductors but towards the end of my degree I developed an interest in "model magnets" - materials carefully designed to imitate statistical mechanical models. In 1996 I moved to North America and have worked in Canada or America ever since. I was a staff scientist at the Chalk River Laboratory, Canada for 5 years before moving to the National Institute of Standards and Technology, where Iím based today. In 1999 I had two papers published in Physical Review Letters. These can be regarded and my first significant scientific papers. The work on the spin liquid Tb2Ti2O7 is still discussed actively today. I work closely with Profs. Bruce Gaulin (McMaster), Steve Bramwell (London) and Chris Wiebe (Winnipeg) through whom I have developed a program of materials synthesis, bulk characterization and eventually facilities research
