Adze
Elk antler, rawhide, steel, brass
L. 11 5/8 in. (29.5 cm)
Raymond and Laura Wielgus Collection

This adze is clearly a result of the enormous trade that took place in the Columbia River valley beginning around 1700 with a trickle of European trade goods, for the blade is imported steel. A tool such as this was used by the Wishram and Wasco for a variety of purposes, including carving at least the basic forms of wooden objects.
