This charming figure is part of a long-standing Costa Rican lapidary
tradition. It is carved from chalcedony, a material that archaeologists
sometimes call "social jade." This is a reference to the
idea that while the stone is not jadeite, it nevertheless was considered
precious and used in the same contexts. |
