Chalcedony
H. 2 in. (5.1 cm)
Raymond and Laura Wielgus Collection
Indiana University Art Museum, 80.102

This charming figure is part of a long-standing Costa Rican lapidary tradition. It is carved from chalcedony, a material that archaeologists sometimes call "social jade." This is a reference to the idea that while the stone is not jadeite, it nevertheless was considered precious and used in the same contexts.
