Oceania Iatmul peoples, Papua New Guinea Dagger Cassowary bone Raymond and Laura Wielgus Collection Indiana University Art Museum, 75.99.2 Daggers were rare in traditional Oceania and were found only in Hawaii, the Admiralty Islands, and New Guinea. Bone daggers were unique to New Guinea and generally used for hand-to-hand fighting and for ritual. A human face shown in typical Iatmul style, with circled eyes and long, curving nose, is depicted on this dagger. |
