Wooden masks take a variety of forms in Oceania and Africa, only one of which is a face covering with eyeholes. Some enclose the entire head, others sit on top of the head, and still others, such as this example, are actually just one part of a larger construction covering the head or entire body. This mask, representing an ancestral spirit, was originally attached to a full-length fiber framework.
