Artists use a variety of materials in
making art. Knowing how artists use these materials, as well
as knowing what materials can and cannot do, gives us a new appreciation
of art works.
The tools artists choose and how they use them create different
results. For example, a palette knife and a brush produce very different
painting effects. A sharp blade can remove large chunks from a wood
block or create delicate details.
Questions to consider in this section:
How did the artist use his/her tools to manipulate the medium?
What are the properties and limitations of the materials used by the artist?
