Materials and Tools
of the Artist
  Establishing a Visual
Vocabulary
  Experience It Live
An understanding of the properties and limitations of artists' tools and materials can serve as an invaluable aid for interpreting, appreciating, and evaluating works of art. In this section, you will learn some of the ways artists have used these materials and tools and the effects produced by these choices.   In this section, you will learn the basic vocabulary of art, such as the fundamentals of art (line, color, shape, etc.) and the principles of design (balance, rhythm, emphasis, etc.). Examining the ways artists use these concepts provides deeper insight into the interpretation and meaning of a work of art.   In this section, you will learn to apply your understanding of artists use of tools, materials, and visual vocabulary to nine masterpieces from the Indiana University Art Museum's Collection. A series of questions and a curator's explanation will guide your exploration of each work.
