Clay Flask with Eros and Psyche

Egypt, said to be from Alexandria
1st century B.C.-1st century A.D.
H. 18.0 cm (7 1/8")
Burton Y. Berry Collection, 76.21.1

This mold-made vase is in the shape of an embracing Eros and Psyche emerging from a calyx. Both are winged, indicating their reunion after Psyche turned into a butterfly. Psyche has one arm around Eros's waist and holds up a flask in her other hand. The Eros-Psyche group was a favorite of Hellenistic artists, who delighted in representing them as cute children engaged in playful, light-hearted eroticism.
