Costs & Financial Aid

A Superior Education That Doesn’t Break the Bank

With leading academic programs, wide-ranging opportunities, and a commitment to providing an affordable education, it’s no wonder IU was named one of the top 50 “Best Value” public colleges and universities in the nation by the Princeton Review.

  • IU offers more than $400 million in financial aid each year.
  • About 64 percent of IU students receive some form of financial aid.
  • Applying for aid is free and hassle-free—and you’ll be considered for many scholarships just by applying to IU.

The Basics

Many IU undergraduates receive one or more types of financial aid to help them and their families pay for college. Financial aid is typically awarded based on academic merit or financial need, and is available in three forms:

  • Grants and scholarships, which do not have to be repaid
  • Loans, which have to be repaid
  • Work-study, which provides aid in exchange for work, usually in the form of campus-based employment

IU offers a variety of forms of merit- and need-based financial aid to help you finance your IU education. We participate in all federal grant, loan, and employment programs, and we award millions of dollars in scholarships every year.
