PME 5 Symposium Site

Lake Forest College is located in the prosperous suburb of Lake Forest, about 28 miles (1 hour by train) north of Chicago's Loop (Center) and, when the traffic flows, only 30 minutes from O'Hare International Airport. It is a national liberal arts college of good reputation, with these days around 1200 mostly residential students.  Getting there!

The relative smallness of Lake Forest College will provide the intimacy enjoyed by participants of the PME 4 (Birmingham) symposium in 2000.  The lovely 107-acre campus is relatively self-contained. Four of the campus buildings date from around 1875, another two from 1898-99, so it has a nice "oldy college" feel. Lake Michigan is just a stroll away, as is the train station to Chicago and points in between. The summer music festival at Ravinia which rivals Tanglewood is only seven miles to the south(unfortunately, their season begins two weeks after our symposium).  As the calendar of musical and dramatic events becomes clearer, we shall make such information available on our website.

Besides several restaurants and a food-serving tavern in the town center, there are popular (and excellent) Italian, Mexican, and Greek (one) restaurants in the next, more modest suburb of Highwood to the south, and then Japanese, Chinese, and other cuisines in Highland Park, just beyond. Besides Ravinia, there may well be musical and dramatic offering at Barat College, within walking distance from the LFC campus.

Symposium participants will be housed in very affordable, modest, but comfortable student accommodation--more precisely in Deerpath Hall, which was extensively renovated two years ago, is air-conditioned, and has on-site fitness facilities and room internet access.  Participants may also may their own, independent accommodation arrangements at hotels within easy reach of the campus.
