Software

The primary source of statistical software support at IU is through the UITS Stat/Math Computing Center. Here is a list of software commonly used at ISCC.

SPSS
  • User-friendly "point-and-click" graphical interface, and sufficient for a large majority of standard analyses.
  • Common in Social Sciences and beyond.
  • Available on Windows or Mac.
  • Purchase a CD with an annual license (August to July) from Stat/Math Computing.
  • Check here for prices ($50 for all students/staff/faculty - 2010-2011).
SAS
  • More powerful than SPSS for more complicated analyses, but less user-friendly requiring syntax programming.
  • Available only on Windows and UNIX.
  • Purchase an annual license from Stat/Math Computing Center.
  • Check here for prices ($100 for Faculty/Staff - 2010-2011).
Stata
  • Common in Sociology and Political Science
  • Also very powerful, advanced analyses.
  • Combination of "point-and-click" and syntax
  • Available on Windows or Mac
  • Contact Stat/Math Computing Center for license/price info.
R
  • Free download (http://www.r-project.org/)
  • Flexible, "open source" for user-created functions, but less documentation
  • Available on Windows or Mac
